Faux fur coats made from Australian wool are in high demand in China. Wool independent consultant Andrew Dennis said that nearly 10 million kilograms of wool was used to make the material, mostly from Australian sheep.
Dennis said that the material was in low demand when it was first manufactured six months ago, but demand suddenly increased a lot last month. He said: "The Chinese call them fake fur materials. They can be dyed in different colors and look like fur, but they don't have skin."
Double-faced jackets were very popular in China last year, but this year, wool coats are very popular in China.
Dennis said that this year's popular products with high wool content, he said: "Every metre of artificial fur fabric is made of nearly 1.5 kg of wool. In fact, it contains a lot of wool, from the point of view of product demand."
And why is it called "artificial fur" instead of Australian wool or sheepskin?
Australian wool products sell well in China, and the Australian brand UGG is a typical example. Dennis said that sheep leather is used to make UGG shoes, while fur is the fabric used to make coats.
He also said that this seems to be a marketing tool, but it also helped to promote the rise in Australian wool prices. The fiber diameter of Australian wool is mainly 19 microns, which is also the type of wool required to mass produce artificial fur coats. Therefore, it is called artificial fur directly, not called Australian wool.
Wool agent Andrew Howells said demand for 19 micron wool is increasing due to the hot sale of coats. He said: "We have seen the rise in wool prices over the past three weeks. China has already produced a lot of such clothing sales, and the product has been quite successful in retail, which has contributed to the increase in wool demand."
China is Australia's biggest wool exporter, followed by India and Europe.
