Egypt: Reduced export volume of long-staple cotton planting area next year

Cotton planting area increased by 20% to 1.8 million mu, yield 66 kg/mu, output increased by 23% to 86,000 tons, and export volume increased by 33% to 44,000 tons.

Although the current cotton production forecast in Egypt is growing, the overall production situation is declining. Compared with 2014/15, the cotton planting area in Egypt has decreased by 24%. Mainly due to changes in government policies in recent years and challenges in all aspects of the market, some farmers have replanted other cash crops such as sugar beets.

It is understood that in October 2015, the Egyptian government allocated 29.6 million US dollars for cotton farmers subsidies to stimulate cotton planting area growth. At the beginning of 2016, the Egyptian government announced that in order to meet the domestic textile demand, increase the cotton planting area, properly adjust the planting structure, reduce the amount of long-staple cotton planting, and appropriately increase the planting of medium-staple cotton and short-staple cotton. Mainly due to the current demand for fabrics in the market, the demand for medium-staple cotton and short-staple cotton is large.

It is understood that Egyptian cotton is basically divided into three categories: super long-staple cotton, long-staple cotton and medium-long cotton. In 2015/16, Egyptian super long-staple cotton includes: Giza 45, Giza 70, Giza 87, Jiza 88, and Giza 92. The long-staple cotton is Giza 86, and the short-staple and medium-length cashmere cotton include Giza 80 and Giza 90. Among them, Giza 86 accounted for 84.3% of the total cotton production in Egypt, Giza 90 accounted for 8%, and Giza 87 accounted for 1.8%.
